If you were wondering...

Well I am just going to sum up the most exciting events of the week!

Monday was a pretty normal day here in Segovia. I went to my classes, and in between spent time hanging out with friends in the work room (which is really interesting because it is all bricks and looks really old!) Then in my cinema class we started watching a movie called 1492. I was surprised though because it was a movie that was in English, and we watched it dubbed over in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. I was thinking to myself….I thought that it was a big “no no” to watch movies in a language it wasn’t created for because it takes away from the work itself and we are in a class where one would think that they would discourage such behavior…oh well! Anyways later that night I got to watch dancing with the stars (Spanish style) with my host parents. It was called something like “Mira quien baile” or something along those lines. It was funny the types of people they had on the show. They had a couple guys who used to be bullfighters, some news reporters and a futbol player. None of the usual “actor/singers” we are used to in the states. Oh well! It was fun to watch!

Tuesday- We have a new president in the United States! How exciting! There is SO much coverage for this in Spain, it is amazing. I didn’t realize how much other countries are interested in the politics of the United States! A bunch of people from our group hung out in our classroom and watched the inauguration on CNN live via projector. It was strange to not be in the US for this day! My host family kept asking me what I think of the new president and the decisions he is making…though I think they are more informed politically than I am. Gosh I sound like such a bad American! Though it is amazing how much more connected to their world they are than we Americans tend to be. Every time I return to my house here in Spain the TV is always on to the news of the world, and it sounds like that is the way with most other people in our group and in the US I hardly watch the news at all! Actually it is kind of funny, because all of the people in our group’s host families basically watch the same channels so we are picking up on all of the most popular commercial songs and catch phrases! Katie and I were joking around that we watch way more commercials here than we ever did at home, and we are going to know all about these Spanish products! Hehe Oh and Katie and I took a walk into a different part of Segovia we hadn’t walked through before. It was exciting! We walked over 2 lovely rivers and the city looks absolutely gorgeous when it is all lit up.

Wednesday- I’m getting old. I can’t really remember what went on this day! I know I went to school and all. It must have been a pretty average day! Oh I went running for the first time here! It was AWFUL! Segovia is by far the most hilly city in the entire world. No joke, and I decided to run with Katie, the super athlete, which probably wasn’t the best idea for starting off! Haha actually it wasn’t too bad. There is a beautiful running trail that goes past the Alcazar, and by the river and mountains. Very picturesque! It keeps your mind of the hills! (well atleast for a little bit) J Oh! And I watched futbol with my host dad, it was the funniest thing because he is the nicest little smiley, shy guy and I was in my room downstairs and I hear him shouting in Spanish. I was wondering to myself what in the world would be capable of making this guy lose his temper! I went upstairs in a bit and he is all up in arms about this futbol game! His favorite team is Sevilla and they were behind. I started watching it…and it became addicting. I suddenly found myself all involved in this game and actually caring who won! Oh my host dad was proud! J

Thursday and friday- Ok Thursdays and Fridays are always my favorite days because I only have one class at 4 on Thursdays and then our excursions on Friday- so I get to sleep in and enjoy the city. Thursday morning Katie and I went to the market and the grocery store (which is the smallest store ever) and it is always busy! At the market we bought our host moms flowers. When I came home I gave them to here and thanked her for “being the best Mom of Spain” She loved them J. I am really lucky to have the host family I do. They are the sweetest people ever! Later that night we had “ girls movie night” in our classroom and we watched the pride and the prejudice with Spanish subtitles! Katie and I even brought cookies for everybody! The people in Spain hardly ever consume sugar, so we were all craving some, so cookies hit the spot nicely. Friday I only had one class and we met to talk about the history of the aqueduct! It dates back to the 1 century, and it is the only Roman aqueduct from that time still standing. This is especially amazing because they didn’t use cement or anything…so technically if the ground shifted it could all fall down someday! Crazy! Then a couple lady friends and I went to celebrate our 2 week anniversary of being here by going out to coffee at La Colonial and playing phase 10! Oh by the way a note for Julie-last week when I was at La Colonial they played the song Caraluna from our Spanish CD and I thought about you! Oh and today is also very special because it is my host Parent’s 37th wedding anniversary! How special. They love each other so much. It is great!
